Allgauer’s on the Riverfront

Oh man, I gotta tear this place a new one.

Allgauer’s on the Riverfront is the restaurant inside the Northbrook Hilton Hotel.  And, lest you be fooled by the name, by “Riverfront” they mean “artificial chlorinated lake with glorified sprinkler system in center.”  I say potato, Hilton says “Riverfront.”  All kidding aside, I think there is a small “river” that I suspect is a sewage tube (since its enforced with concrete and there’s a curious smell of, oh what is it again, ah yes, FECES).

But alas, we must get to their food.  Their food is preciously prepared by Chef Warren DeWolfe, of who-knows-where fame.  And it shows.  A Prime Rib (~$30) was over-cooked, oversalted, and tough to chew.  The Pork tenderloin was stiff, covered in an obviously-made-from-powder gravy, with uninspired veggies (carrots, asparagus, cucumber, etc) in butter.  And the kicker - the “bread pudding” dessert (which sounded lovely on the menu) was glorified Sara Lee poundcake from the grocery store, heated with drizzled canned cherry glaze, and vanilla ice cream.

I know I’m kind of snobby when it comes to food, but come on.  All this for a $60 dinner bill?  You better thank your stars I’m on the corporate account or I would have a pissed asparagus-smelling pee right on the floor in the restaurant.

At least the smell would match their “riverfront” theme.
